Travel tips, local guides & hidden gems – all about Costa Blanca

A Day in Alicante

From Morning Coffee to Sunset Views

Alicante is not a city you rush through. It’s a place to slow down, walk, eat well, swim a little, and end the day with one of the best views on the Costa Blanca. This one-day itinerary is designed for exactly that: relaxed, walkable, and perfectly balanced between city life and the sea.

Morning – Old Town Walk & Coffee (9:00–11:00)

Start your day in Barrio de Santa Cruz, Alicante’s charming old town. Narrow streets, colorful houses, flowers on balconies — this is where the city feels most authentic. Early in the morning it’s quiet, making it ideal for a slow walk and photos.

Tip: Don’t overthink directions. Just walk uphill and explore.

Stop for a simple coffee in a local bar. No need for fancy brunch spots here — Alicante does “quick coffee, slow morning” very well.

Late Morning – Explanada de España (11:00–13:00)

Next, head down to the Explanada de España, the city’s iconic seaside promenade. The palm trees, wave-patterned mosaic and sea breeze make this one of the most pleasant walks in the city.

  • shaded and flat
  • perfect for a casual stroll
  • often accompanied by street musicians

This is Alicante at its most effortless.

Lunch – Local & Unpretentious (13:00–14:30)

For lunch, keep it simple. Alicante is known for its rice dishes, fresh seafood and Mediterranean flavors.

Look for places where locals eat — especially at lunchtime. Avoid menus shouting “best paella in town” and go for honest, traditional cooking instead.

A relaxed lunch sets you up nicely for the afternoon without slowing you down.

Afternoon – Beach Time at Playa del Postiguet (15:00–17:00)

Playa del Postiguet is Alicante’s city beach, located right next to the old town and promenade. Despite its central location, it’s clean, well-maintained and surprisingly enjoyable.

You can:

  • go for a quick swim
  • relax on the sand
  • walk along the paseo
  • or simply sit and enjoy the sea view

For a one-day visit, this beach fits perfectly into the flow of the day.

Golden Hour – Castillo de Santa Bárbara (18:00–20:00)

The highlight of the day is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, perched high above the city. Visiting around sunset is absolutely worth it.

Getting up:

  • elevator (easy and convenient)
  • walking path (scenic but steep — bring water)

From the top, you’ll get panoramic views over Alicante, the harbor and the Mediterranean. As the sun sets, the city slowly lights up below — easily one of the best viewpoints on the Costa Blanca.

Evening – Relaxed Dinner or Drinks (20:30–)

Alicante evenings are calm and social rather than loud or flashy. Finish your day with:

  • a casual tapas dinner
  • a glass of wine or beer
  • or a slow walk through the old town

No rush. No pressure. That’s the charm.

If You Have More Time

  • Visit Mercado Central (best in the morning)
  • Explore MACA or MUBAG museums
  • Take a short trip to San Juan Beach or Villajoyosa

Practical Tips

  • 👟 Wear comfortable shoes — cobblestones and slopes are everywhere
  • ☀️ Spring and autumn are ideal; in summer plan around siesta hours
  • 🚶‍♂️ Alicante’s city center is very walkable
